Today, 11 May 2019, an unpleasant day, the Basque Association of Industrial Heritage and Public Works has held an act of remembrance of architect Alberto de Palacio y Elissague (Sara, 25 January 1856 – Getxo, 11 May 1939) on the 80th anniversary of his death. The Basque architect conceived, planned and built, together with Ferdinand Arnodin, the first transporter bridge in the world: the Vizcaya Bridge. The bridge is located between the towns of Portugalete and Las Arenas (Getxo); it is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and an icon of Basque industrial heritage. After visiting the architect’s bust in Getxo, AVPIOP members have placed a bouquet of flowers on his tomb at the cemetery of Portugalete.
